Installation and pre-commissioning of two 53MVA power transformers, completed on schedule despite a developing cyclone affecting the region.
In March, our team was engaged to install, assemble, vacuum fill, oil process and pre-commission two 132kV/11kV 53MVA power transformers in the Midwest region of Western Australia. Partway through the build, a cyclone began developing off the WA coastline. The project required careful judgement, clear communication with the client and a disciplined approach to safety as conditions changed throughout the works.
As the cyclone grew in strength, the team approached a critical decision point ahead of installing the bushing turrets, a highly invasive task that leaves the transformer's main tank, core and windings exposed to the atmosphere. With the storm's path still uncertain, the decision was made to stop work, pressurise the transformers, leak check the units and secure all ancillary equipment. Within 24 hours, the site was evacuated for personnel safety.
Our process begins before mobilisation with a pre-site inspection, meeting the client face to face, completing site inductions and walking the work area to assess conditions. Each morning, the client was briefed on the day's planned tasks, and each evening, our team provided a clear update on progress and any issues encountered. That consistent communication meant the client always knew exactly where the project stood, even as weather conditions changed.
The scope of work was completed well within the project timeline, even accounting for weather-related delays. Both transformers were installed, processed and pre-commissioned without damage, loss or complication, giving the client and stakeholders a result delivered on time, within budget and without callbacks. The project gave our team the opportunity to demonstrate the judgement and experience that comes from treating every job with the same level of care, regardless of scale or conditions.
